1. A faithful friend is the medicine of life (Ecclesiasticus 6:16).

2. Beloved, let us love one another (John 4: 7).

3. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above yourselves.

4. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

It is only then that we can love and be there for others with an open heart, full empathy and a sense of personal strength.

Why loving yourself enables you to give more love to others?

1. When you love yourself you feel empowered and strong, therefore capable of loving wholeheartedly;

2. You have a heightened sense of self-esteem and personal security;

3. You don't feel the need to compete with others and/or compare yourself to them, therefore you can love them and be there for them 100%.

4. You know that your love for them doesn't come at your expense.

5. You know that making them happy doesn't take away anything from you.

6. You know that being there for them gives them a sense of support and comfort, enables them to more easily struggle with whatever issues in their life they struggle with, and enables them to self-actualize themselves further.

7. You are motivated to give, love and help since you know from your experience how good it is to feel loved and empowered.

When you love yourself and sit comfortably in your own skin, you can be there for others powerfully, authentically, being truly motivated to helping them go through life and its difficulties, facilitate their way to their own happiness and supporting them with an open heart, empathy and tolerance.

It is then that you can apply the insights of the New Testament and, as Henry David Thoreau said: "The most I can do for my friend is simply be his friend".
