Does our lifestyle discredit walking? Is it inconvenient to walk any distance? Walking is a simple easy pleasure.
Most people take every opportunity they can find not to walk. We take an elevator instead of the stairs. We park our car as close to the mall entrance as humanly possible. We will even spend money to have some one else park our car so we do not have to walk to the car in a parking lot or parking garage. We sometimes even ask a friend drop us off at the curb while they park the car, we will sit and wait for them to come to us. This is unfortunate in several ways. You can enjoy walking; let me explain the three ways to you.
First - Walking provides a wealth of physical benefits. These benefits include burning calories, exercising your heart, lungs, and muscles, strengthening your immune system and of course reducing physical stress. You can lose weight while walking. Usually people, who are committed to walking every day, walk with a friend. They use this form of exercise as a supplement to going to the gym. You have much more control over your speed while you walk and the distances that to can cover. You also do not have to have any expensive equipment either, just comfortable fitting shoes and comfortable clothes.
Second - Walking can release ideas, give your mind space and freedom to think, help alter your perceptive and help you to solve problems. Some people meditate or pray while they walk. Others enjoy looking at the nature around them. Taking the time to stop and touch a plant or watch an animal or bird in its natural habitat. Being out in the fresh air tends to help us clear our minds of stressful thoughts or worries. We find alternatives and options in out thoughts while we walk. We also tend to look forward to this time by ourselves, as a self-renewal period.
Third - While you are enjoying the benefits of the first two ways, you are getting where you want to go. While it is, true that walking does take more time then driving or riding a bike, you do get to your destination. Walking may take a little planning if you are walking to an appointment or meeting. Actually, walking is mostly a leisurely exercise and the enjoyment of getting to our destination is part of the experience. Walking can be part of your plan to life your life on purpose and with focus.
You can see that walking indeed can be the most productive use of your time. So get off your seat, get out of your car, pick up your feet and start walking.
