Stress is one of the most dangerous emotions we can feel. Stress is not just an emotional issue, but a physical one too. When we feel stress, powerful chemicals are produced naturally by our body, such as adrenaline and cortisol. These chemicals are designed to provide a rush of strength to deal with an emergency. Chronic stress provides a constant flow of these chemicals to our cells and contributes to a myriad of health issues including ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression.

Resentments are also powerful emotions which create stress in our lives. To carry resentments with us is like carrying a weighted sack around on our shoulders at all times. There was once a saying that stated "holding a resentment towards someone is like drinking hemlock and expecting the other person to die." How accurate! The harder thing to do is to forgive some of the wrongs that are done us, but the relief that we feel is well worth the task of swallowing our pride.

Although it is easier said than done, relieving stress and letting go of resentments are two important and powerful steps you can take when seeking happiness and health in your life. "Happy and healthy" is not just a cliche. By creating emotional happiness from within in our lives, we will be allowing our physical body the chance to create a healthy environment for our internal systems to operate the way they were designed to.

As a currently recovering alcoholic, I had made many decisions when I was active that haunted me on a daily basis. I knew that the disease of alcoholism was a great explanation of my behavior, but it was hardly an excuse for the destruction and pain that I caused through that behavior. Through recovery and the 12 steps, I learned to live the part of the literature that stated, "I will not regret the past, nor wish to shut the door on it." This philosophy had its beginning in me first being able to forgive all the wrongs that were ever done to me. Little did I know that the resentments I were harboring at the time were just impeding the growth that I would need to realize if I were to ever expect forgiveness from the multitudes of people who I had wronged. The fact that I was able to do this, and then make my amends to the people who deserved them, has brought so much freedom to my thinking and allowed me to be healthier physically and mentally than I have ever been in my life.
