Learning how to increase memory power can be a frustrating process for many people. Some feel that people in general either have a good memory, or don't. Although certain people do have an innate ability to learn faster, or retain information, memory is just like a muscle that can be strengthened using techniques and exercises.
Probably one of the most common ways of how to increase memory power is by the use of mnemonics.
Mnemonics are basically word or image associations which when thought about can remind you of certain events, things, names, etc.
For example, back in school you may have heard of a very famous man named "Roy G. Biv". Although Roy G. Biv isn't an actual person, that name may remind you of all the colors of a rainbow and which order they come in. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet.
Another example is for music students who are trying to learn how to read music. Maybe you've heard of the phrase "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge", or a variation of it. Again, using the first letters of this mnemonic we are able to establish the names of the notes on each line of a treble clef. E, G, B, D, and F.
This is what we call a first letter mnemonic and can be applied to dozens of situations. By practising creating your own mnemonics, you can actually train your brain to look for these faster, and recall them quicker.
In the same vain, you can use visualization techniques as means of how to increase memory power. Again, this is considered a mnemonic, but makes it so when you think of a certain thing, it will relate to things you wish to remember.
Let's take learning a new language as an example. It can be really difficult to remember vocabulary especially if you're not in the position to use it daily. But if we use a visualization mnemonic, we can train our brain to associate images with words or phrases.
In Japanese, the phrase for "Good Night" is "Oyasuminasai". It sounds so much different than its English counterpart that it could very well be difficult to remember. But, if you were to think about an image related to the phrase, such as a Big full moon on a clear night's sky, and then think of the word "oyasuminasai" over and over while still visualizing the moon, your brain would recognize that these two relate somehow. So the next time you try to remember what the Japanese word for "Good Night" is, you would recall the big moon, and the word "oyasuminasai".
In addition to mnemonics, you can use exercises that increase your concentration which will also greatly help you on your quest of how to increase memory power.
The simplest one you can do is known as the "Candle Gazing Exercise". With this exercise you simply light a common dinner candle and place it about arms length away from your body in a darkened room. You want it to be at around eye level.
Now, close your eyes and clear your mind as best you as can. When you are ready, open yours eyes and gaze at the candle without blinking. Try and focus on the candle as much as possible. If your eyes to start to water and you feel the need to blink, close your eyes and try and visualize the candle.
In this state, you should try and remember all the little details of the candle. At first this will be difficult as you aren't trained yet, so don't be discouraged if the candle seems a little fuzzy in your mind.
After a few moments, open your eyes again and gaze at the candle. Repeat this process for at least 20 minutes on a daily basis. The more you practise the better your concentration which is a key component when trying to learn how to increase memory power.
